A Milestone Worth Celebrating: The Grand Opening of Toronto Hyundai & Genesis Yorkdale

For Benny Leung, the official grand opening of Toronto Hyundai and Genesis Yorkdale marks the culmination of more than four decades in the automotive industry — and a seven-year vision brought to life.

Benny began his career in 1981 as a Chrysler salesperson, working his way through every level of dealership operations before becoming an owner. Today, that journey reaches a defining moment with the opening of this new flagship dual-brand facility in North York.

“The grand opening of Toronto Hyundai and Genesis Yorkdale is truly a dream come true,” said Leung. “These flagship facilities represent years of hard work, vision, and dedication from our entire team. They embody our commitment to innovation, customer care, and creating spaces that reflect the future of automotive retail. It’s incredibly rewarding to see this vision come to life and to share it with the community we proudly serve.”

A $30 Million Investment in the Future of Automotive Retail

Operated by Marsim Auto Group, which Benny and his wife Lorri Leung named after their daughters, Martina and Simona, the combined Toronto Hyundai and Genesis Yorkdale development represents a $30 million investment in the Toronto market.

The 40,000-square-foot dual-brand complex sits on three acres of prime real estate just south of Yorkdale Shopping Centre and is easily accessible from Highway 401. Designed to deliver both scale and sophistication, the facility features:

  • Dedicated Hyundai and Genesis brand environments
  • A two-level service department with 24 advanced service bays
  • Expanded service capacity to better support customers long-term

Designed with Purpose and Precision

Architect Wes Surdyka worked closely with the Leungs to design a space that balances bold design with everyday functionality, while Hady Construction led the execution of the build. Support from the City of Toronto helped facilitate key road and utility upgrades, transforming a once underutilized site into a thriving commercial destination.

“We are so excited to finally be here,” said Leung. “If you look around, we’ve truly changed the landscape of Dufferin Street and Highway 401.”

A Grand Opening with Cultural Meaning

The grand opening celebration paid tribute to both heritage and brand identity. Chinese cultural elements honoured Leung’s roots as a native of Hong Kong, while Korean influences reflected the global heritage of Hyundai and Genesis.

The Hyundai portion of the event featured traditional lion dancers and performers symbolizing prosperity and celebration, while the Genesis experience showcased elegant performers and the presentation of a Korean porcelain moon jar, a historic symbol of harmony and balance.

The event welcomed family, friends, employees, industry partners, executives from both brands, and local dignitaries including James Pasternak, whose riding includes the new dealerships.

Built on Relationships, Not Just Cars

Despite decades in the industry, Leung remains clear about what truly motivates him.

“I don’t really like cars,” he said with a smile. “I love people. People and building relationships are my life.”

That philosophy has guided his career since joining Hyundai in 1996, when he purchased a dealership in Oakville before later developing a compact midtown Toronto location — now known as Kia Yorkdale — which eventually outgrew its original footprint.

“Take care of people, treat them right, and be honest,” said Leung. “Deliver what you promise. To be standing here more than 40 years later, carrying those same values forward, has deep meaning.”

Industry Recognition and Looking Ahead

Leung’s impact has been widely recognized across the industry, including leadership roles as President of the Trillium Automobile Dealers Association (now the Motor Vehicle Retailers of Ontario) and President of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association.

Hyundai Canada executives praised Leung’s early belief in the brand and his willingness to take calculated risks that helped shape Hyundai’s success in Canada.

Today, Toronto Hyundai and Genesis Yorkdale stand as a reflection of that vision — purpose-built, future-focused, and centered on people.
